Elmer “Buddy” Dashiell - Player

A crafty left-hand pitcher who showed much promise as a younger player. After some sand lot baseball he started to play organized ball with the Queen City Tigers (Salisbury),Fruitland Clippers and the Phillips Delicious teams in the Maryland Intra-state Negro League. This league consisted of the Queen City Tigers, Fruitland, Oaksville, Wicomico Yanks, Snow Hill, Pocomoke and Cambridge, and also Crisfield. In 1945 he was invited to attend training camp with the Newark Eagles which included catcher Roy Campanella and pitcher Don Newcombe. After some more polish and experience he was signed by the Poconos 9, Stroudsburg, PA in 1950. "Buddy" was rated the top pitcher in the North Atlantic during much of his stay with Stroudsburg. In 7 starts he was 5 0 the first year. He managed to be a winning pitcher because of his exceptional curve ball. "Buddy" played through 1953 at which time he decided to open a business.
