Matty attended schools in both Hagerstown ands Laurel, De. After he moved here at the age of 12. He signed with the Sharptown Eagles in 1948 at the age of 14. He then moved to the Bi-County League for the 1949-50 seasons. But it was with the Delmar Railroaders that Matty began to shine with the bat and glove for the next nine years.
He hit .307 in 1951, and in 1953 he belted a hefty .331, and became an All-Star first baseman every year thereafter, only ending his career when the league folded in 1959. In 1951 Matty was hit by the pitch ten times in a limited league schedule.
He worked for the railroad for many years and a member of the Lion's Club. Matty spent many years teaching baseball to the youth of the area. He was elected into our Hall of Fame in 1988 as a player. He was known also as "Gentleman" Matthews.
